5. Bracebridge Gazette January 1924
" DEATH OF JOHN HENRY BROOKS...Mr. John Brooks, one of Muskoka's pioneers, passed away at his home on Draper/Macaulay Townline, on Friday night, Dec 21st. He had been ailing for two years.
Mr. Brooks was born in King county (sic) in 1851. He lived there for twenty-two years. He came to Muskoka with his father, mother, sister and two brothers about the 27th of December 1873 (which is a year after his grandmother Ann Brooks died?) They drove from King county to the head of Koshee Lake (now called Kahshe) with a team of horses. They stayed the first night in a little log shanty with neighter door nor windows in it. They built a fire in one corner in what was then called a caboose. They could hear the wolves howling around all night. The snow was six feet deep when they came. They stayed all winter and took out board timber and went back to King county in the spring. (of course it should be King Township in the county of York).
While back in King county Mr. J. Brooks was married to Miss Sarah Brooks. He then took up farming for himself on the flats of the Canastoten River. He had his third crop all ready to draw in the barn when a heavy rain storm flooded the river and washed out the grist mill dam above his farm. The flood washed out everything for miles along the river. Mr. Brooks lost everything. He then came to Muskoka again in 1878, taking up land at the head of Riley Lake in Ryde Township (where Lewisham was situated) and farmed for thirteen years.
He came to Bracebridge in 1891 and stayed for 10 years. He then bought a farm in Draper and lived there till he died. His first wife died in 1896. He was married on the 13th of July 1898 to Miss Annie Slingerland. He died at his home on Draper/Macaulay townline.
The funeral service at the house was held by Rev. W. Zubrigg. Interment took place at the Free Methodist burying ground in Macaulay.
He leaves to mourn his loss, three sisters, Mrs. Henry Smith of Housey's Rapids, Mrs. Ellwood (Ceila) of Winnipeg, Mrs. Roberston (Polly) of Northwest, three brothers, George Brooks of this town, Stephen Brooks of Cooper's Falls, Robert Brooks of Fenelon Falls, two daughters, Mrs. Garnet Hover of Rugby and Miss Olive Brooks at home, hour sons, W. W. Brooks of this town, Bert Brookds of East Bay, Manitoba, Thomas Edgar (Bud) and Roland at home.
The Pall bearers were Messrs. Thos. Gray, T. Moors, Ezra Dixon, Wm Dixon, George Leeder and John Forrester."
