3. From Brooks, C.W. / Family
submitted by Edna Vander Ploeg
In 1903 Charles William Brooks and Johanna Sophia Henrietta (Annie) Dierks were married in Bracebridge, Ontario. Their first married years were spent in Ontario, where Charlie worked in the lumber mill. A daughter, Verna, was born in Bracebridge. Later they moved to Fernie, B.C. and Charlie worked in the lumbering Industry. Here daughter Edna was born. The tragic Fernie fire in 1908 completely destroyed their home and all their possessions. By taking refuge in coke-ovens their lives were saved. A railway coach took them and many other Fernie residents to the coke-ovens where they stayed until the forest fire burned out.
After the fire, the Charles Brooks family decided to try farming in Saskatchewan. In the fall of 1908 father filed on his homestead in Estevan. He secured the N.W. quarter of 23-1-13 W2 and in the spring of 1909 the family settled on this land. The Mount Green post office was at this location from 1912 until it closed in the late 1930s, with the exception of a few years when it was moved to the Grosvenor farm but again moved back to the Brooks' farm.
In the early years the breaking of land was done with a team of oxen and horses combined. The same teams hauled coal from Estevan mines, a distance of over 40 miles. A small wooden house was built in 1909 and a sod kitchen added. The barn was made of sods. These buildings were used until 1915 when the Hudson's Bay quarter across the road was purchased and new buildings were erected.
Charles Brooks was on the Greenmount School Board and served as Secretary-Treasurer for many years. During the early years he was a Councilor of the Rural Municipality of Souris Valley No. 7. Five children were born on the Mount Green farm, namely: Theodore, Mildred, Helen, Russell and Gene.

2. British Columbia Archives # vol 547 - 1211- died June 30, 1940 Edward Marshall ROBBINS born Nov 8 1877, in Ontario Canada. Parents were Thomas ROBBINS and Isabelle WEATHERALL, both born in Ontario. Edward died at St. Paul's Hospital from a cerebral hemmorhage due to high blood pressure (occurred for 2 years). Two years previous he received an Electric Shock and only partially recovered. Edward worked 33 years as a conductor for BCE Rly, last working in July 1938. This would match to the time he received his injury and I do wonder if it was work related since the trams ran on the overhead electrical cable that the conducters would have to deal with.
