8. Muskoka Herald 7/7/1898 this week...
"Our township mourns the loss of one of its finest men, in the person of John Brooks, Esq. of Lewisham, who passed away after a lingering and painful illness on 28th of June. He was attended by Dr. Burt, of Severn Bridge, - everything that loving hands could do to alleviate his sufferings was in vain-- as cancer on the liver had obtained a deep seated hold on his system. His intense sufferings were borne with christian resignation. He leaves a widow and seven children to mourn his death among whom are Mrs. Henry Smith, of Ryde, John and George Brooks of Bracebridge, Stephen and Robert of Morrison, Mrs. Will Ruttan and Frank at home. His obsequies were conducted by Rev. George Lawrence. The funeral was largely attended as the deceased gentleman was beloved by all with whom he came in contract. He had a heart of gold and his word was his bond. He was a member of the school board for a number of years and was truly the teacher's friend. The bereaved has the loving sympathy of the township in their irreparable loss.

Buried Mountainview Cemetery Jones 2, Block 40, Plot 6, Lot 14 . Came to Canada with John & Ann his parents at 3 years of age. He married Phoebe Ann Brown b. October 4 1832 Yorkshire England on May 14 1850. Charles inherited $200.00 from his fathers will, she died February 14, 1919 at the age of 86 in Keystown Sask. but was taken to Vancouver to be buried beside Charles (Jones 2, Block 40, Plot 6, Lot 13). Phoebe emmigrated 1834. Mr. Brooks cleared a bush homestead in Peel County; BROOKS Charles Peel County Con 5 Lot 17 h, in fact it is recalled he cleared two bush homesteads of hardwood at an early age. Then moved to Port Elgin for a few years. Mrs. Brooks was very industrious and thrifty, she spun all her own wool on a spinning wheel and wove all her own cloth on a loom. From these she made all the family clothes, including men's suits. She also braided straw and made hats. They heard of great opportunites in the west and decided to come west to make their home. They came west in 1893. They came in a settler's car and the trip took ten days. They brought a car load of effects, horses, cows, implements, etc. In the immigrant train also were the Cairn family, Lawtons, Sittlers and Bowies.
The Brooks family landed in Pense with 5 boys and l girl ( l daughter and one son Wm. Henry predeceased) and they settled eight and a half miles north-west of Pense. They chose this piece of land because they could get water. The first buildings were a sod stable and flat roofed shack. Times were hard in the early days and with not too much to eat, they sometimes boiled wheat. They started with 3 horses and a walking plow and grew enough wheat for flour for the first year. There was lots of prairie grass for fee, also the oats.
The second year they threshed 72 bushels of wheat off ttwelve acres and kept it for flour and seed. They cut the crop with a binder and Bob Kinnon from Pense did the threshing with horse power.
The first winter was very cold and started early, there was lots of snow. They hauled wood from Riddalls Ranch, about 15 miles. They would get away before daylight, but the wood, eat a frozen lunch and get home before dark. Wagons and sleighs were the only means of travelling. They often went into Regina with a grist of wheat for flour. People were very sociable and friendly and helped one another. The Keys family were the nearest neighbours. Prairie fires were common, at this time was composed of the station agent, Mr. McCracken, a store run by Mr. Marling, section house, Mr. Muggeridge, and blacksmith, Mr. Tom Brooks. (I believe this is our Thomas Brooks h/o Louisa) Later the boys, Ed, Tom, John, Ben and Joe took up homesteads of their own, all north-west of Pense.
Of the original pioneers of this history, Charles Brooks passed away in 1916 at the home of his son, Tom in Vancouver. Mrs. Brooks passed away Feb 14, 1919 at the age of 86 at the home of her son, Ben, at Keystown. Her body was taken to the coast and laid to rest beside her husband. Mrs. Brooks was a good mother, a kind neighbour and true servant of the church. A pioneer in the east and later in the west.8.
