2. From History of Pense and District: In 1892 Dick House came West to locate homsteads for himselfand his son. Like many another, he passed up the heavy land around Pense, in favour of the lighter land nearer the valley. Also it was possible to dig a well and get water in that district. They shipped a carload of settler's effects to Pense the next year. Darcy travelled with his father in the car, and his mother and the rest of the family travelled in a tourist car, attached to the train. They arrived in Pense on April 14, 1893, after being on the road for over a week.
Friendly neighbors took them in and helped them to build a house with lumber hauled from Regina. It was over twenty miles, but they were able to make the trip in one day.
They broke up 10 acres with a walking plow, but owing to the dry weather they had no crop in 1893, or in 1894. the stock picked feed from the prairie, and the family bought wheat from neighbors for 65 cents per bushel, which they took to a grist mill in Regina. the nearby valley supplied wild fruit and wood for fuel.
In those days there was plenty of time to visit the neighbors, the Brooks, the Keys, the McGillivrays, the Bowies and the Wilkies. They went to picnics, plowing bees, barn raisings and ball games in the summer; dances and card parties in the winter.
Darcy lived at home for the first years, then married Catherine Bowie in 1902.
