Individual Note: 1. In the 1901 United Kingdom Census he is shown to be living at 103 Walton Street, in the Parish of St. Giles Oxford, Oxford, England, in what appears to be an orphanage. He is shown as age at last birthday 12 years old, single and a boarder at the residence, and his birthplace is "unknown". The head of the household is Julia M Mayhew, Single, age 44, born in Glastonbury Somerset, whose profession or occupation is shown as "Sister of Charity". Living also at the household is: Charles W Fenton, age 13, born at Staines Middlesex; Charles E Goodrum, age 12 born Market Harboro Leic; Arthur Price age 12, birthplace unknown; Guy W Lawrence, age 11, born ludlow Staffs; George F Paterson, age 11, Birthplace unknown; Robin Fairchild, age 9, birthplace unknown; Henry S Green, age 7 birthplace Aldershot Hants - All of these were boys. Also shown were Florence Waters, age 20, birthplace Sittingbourne Kent, occupation Matron; and Mary A Shepard, age 18, birthplace Durham, Occupation Domestic Servant.
2. On July 19, 1902 he joined the Royal Inniskilling Fuseliers. His Attestation Paper reads:No. 4291, Name Donald Charles Lonsdale, Corps Royal Inniskilling Fuseliers; Questions: 1. What is your Name: Donald Charles Lonsdale. 2. In or near what Parish or Town were you born: In the Parish of Bermondsers, near the Town of London in the County of Surrey. 3. Are you a British Subject - Yes. 4. What is your age - 14 Years 5 Months. 5. What is your Trade or Calling - Nil. 6. Have you resided out of your Fathers House for 3 years... - Yes Victoria Orphanage, Sherland Road. 7. Have you been an Apprentice - No. 8. Are you Married - No. 9. Have you ever been Sentenced or Imprisoned - No. 10. Are you now in the Army - No. 11. Have you ever served in the Army - No. 12. Have you truly stated your previous service - Yes. 13. Have you ever been rejected as unfit - No. 14. Are you willing to be Vacinated - Yes. 15. For what Corps are you willing to be enlisted - Royal Inniskilling Fuseliers. 16. Dis you receive a notice and do you understand it and who gave it to you - Yes, SGM S.Hodgetts, A.S. Corps. 17. Are you willing to serve in the Army for 12 Years should his Majesty so long require your services - Yes. It ends with - I Donald Charles Lonsdale do solemnly declare that the answers made by me to the above questions are true, and that I am willing to fullfil the engagements made - followed by his signature. 3. Home Children: Between 1869 and the early 1930s, over 100,000 children were sent to Canada from Great Britain during the child emigration movement. From the listing of home children, we find he came to Canada in 1903 at the age of 15 (Reference Microfilm Reel number T-482 National Archives ref RG76 C 1a) arriving on the SS Tunisian, from Liverpool, departing August 20, 1903 and arrived in Quebec August 28, 1903. His destination is listed as "Various" and it does not indicate which party he was with.
