vi. Norman Brooks b. 1903 Cypress River, Manitoba, d. 1993 vii. Robert Lynford b. 1910 Cypress River, Manitoba, d. Dec 1977

2. From Carol Fraser: Their first home was at Tara, Ontario in Arran Township, Bruce County. Here they had 4 children. Quill and Billy were the only children left to move west to Cypress River Manitoba in 1892. (They are actually found in the district Lisgar #7, Sub District Ward Argyle a-10 Pg. 8) Here they bought land and the homestead flourished, and they purchased more land. Nine more children were born in Cypress River and one died accidently, Clifford drowned in a rain barrel.

In 1900 William bought a threshing machine and did custom harvesting. It was very profitable. Maggie had the worry of keeping the money safe as the nearest bank was many miles away. She once hid several thousand dollars in the sheaf stacks and then after several days worried that it was not safe and moved it. That same night transients too lodging in the stacks and burned them to the ground. Another time she was knocked unconscious and her home ransacked. The money was not in the house. Despite these incidence she still helped the hungry and weary travellers trekking west. One time as many as 22 men, women and children were taken in and given food. Their animals were also fed and watered.

In 1906 friends and neighbours of the Brooks were moving to points further west. William filed for homestead rights to NE-6-36-10 and in
1907 he and Billy, who was then 16 years old, went by train to Invermay. They bought 3 horses, a wagon, a walking stubble plow and
whatever else was necessary. They picked a yard site with great care. A shanty was built for shelter and a few acres plowed. Plowing was not difficult as the land was grassland in that area. They returned to Cypress for the harvest. The horses were shipped home from Invermay by train. William was impressed with the land in Assiniboia as it was called then and because he also needed more land with his large family he decided to move.

In 1908 Billy and William returned with more horses and equipment. Later in the summer, Maggie arrived with 4 children, Elmer, Lynford 3 yrs and 1 yr. and Edward 13 and Edith 10. Quill and Lenard stayed in Cypress to manage the farm and the three remaining children: Eva, Myrtle and Norman. William built a huge frame home which they called an Ontario style home but it was not ready when Maggie arrived. It was a very hard year for Maggie and a very busy one. When the harvest came, William returned to Cypress. An epidemic of typhoid was sweeping the country that year, and while William was away, several of the children came down with it. Edward died Oct 18 1908, just 13 years old. Friends and neighbours were helpful and kind. Lynford who was a baby was nursed through the illness by Mrs. Daniard Daynard where he slept on the grand piano. The disease raged on and Maggie contracted it. She was so ill they took her to hospital in Winnipeg, before the fever died, several other family members had also been hospitalized. Lenard ended up in St. Boniface hospital after coming down with the fever. He wondered why he was seeing two threshing machines. It was months before they were all
well. Only Elmer remained well, and the family returned to Cypress River and Quill went to the homestead in Saskatchewan and took care of it.

In the spring of 1909 Maggie and Lenard brought the rest of the family back to Saskatchewan. The house was finally ready to live in. In the fall of 1909, Lenard and Quill went back to Cypress River for the harvest. Quill married the boy back home, Joe Ruston, and made Cypress River their home, where Joe died years later and Quill remained. Lenard took care of the farm and stock, and in the spring of 1910 the land at Cypress was sold and the remaining stock and equipment shipped to Kuroki. The Brooks were finally settled once and for all in Sask. Another child was born to them in January, Chester and their mailing address was Bond. One more child was born at Bond but it did not survive. Babies that were born there and uttered their first cry in Maggie's able hands. Fevered brows felt her cold touch. In times of sickness, death and sorrow many a friend was aware of her presence, and her quiet strength and compassion. William again brought a threshing machine into the community and custom threshed from his Wadena home. He was not only a pioneer at heart but also a crusader. He had one of the first cars. Bond School, later Glengariff, was one of his projects. He was there for the first sod turning on a rainy Sunday morning. Wadena Union Hospital came about from his efforts and more crusaders like him. Building roads took much of his time. He was school trustee, a municipal councillor, a hospital board member, and a politician. He lived a busy productive life until his death. Only the echo of his violin that now stayed on the wall, could be heard playing his favorite tune "When you and I were young, Maggie"...the last song he ever played.
