5. Obituary: newspaper - The Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows Gazette - Last Rites Held for J. Brooks On Monday - Last rites for Joseph Brooks, 77 of Third Avenue, were held Monday at Burnett Memorial Baptist Church, Hammond. Rev. A.L. Foster and Rev. L.G. Baker officiated. Interment was made in the Maple Ridge Cemetery. He was a resident of this district since 1917. On arriving here 32 years ago, he entered the carpentry trade until he retired four years ago. He served on the Maple Ridge Council. Mr. Brooks was born in Bruce County, Ontario, and formerly farmed at Pense, Sask. Surviving are his wife, two sons Bernard Brooks of Haney; and Joseph Brooks, Hammond; two daughters, Mrs. T.R. Thompson, Third Avenue, and Mrs. A.B. Finnie, Hammond; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Note from Carol Fraser: In the spring of 1881 the family returned to Saugeen and were a great help to Jacob and Issac Liebler on the farm as this was just after the barn and stables had burned down, Emanuel and young sister Maggie kept busy at this time making Maple Sugar. After a short while they got a house in Port Elgin for a year where Laura was born in 1882, their next move was to a house on the 2nd Saugeen near George Guyer's shingle mill where Emanuel became engineer and then in 1884 Arthur Allan was born.

The Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows Weekly Gazette: Obituary: Oliver Wesley Brooks Following a prolonged illness the death occurred January 11, 1934, at his home on the Laity road, of Oliver Wesley Brooks, at the age of 38. He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Brooks. He served in the Great War, having enlisted at Regina with the Forty-Sixth Battalion. He was also a member of the Port Hammond Orange Lodge. Besides his sorrowing parents he leaves to mourn his loss three brothers, Alfred, Burnard, and Joseph and two sisters, Mrs. T.R. Thompson and Mrs. Andrew Finnie, all of Maple Ridge. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, January 14, at 2:30 p.m., from Maple Ridge Baptist Church to the Maple Ridge cemetery. The services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. A.J.L. Haynes, the chosen text being John 14:1-3. Miss Mabel Laity rendered a solo, "Star of the East", and two favorite hymns of the deceased, "Some Day the Silver Chord Will Break" and "In the Land of Fadeless Day" were sung. The last rites were performed by the members of the Hammond L.O.L. and after all ceremonies were over Mr. Ramsey sounded the "Last Post". The numerous floral offerings attested the high esteem in which the family is held. The pall bearers were Messrs Alfred and Burnard Brooks, brothers of the deceased, Andrew Finnie, and T. Thompson, brothers-in-law, and Charles and Lloyd Hendry, cousins. The sympathy of their many friends in the community is extended to the bereaved family.

4. What was sad about John's death was that it was complications due to surgery. Usually a duodenal ulcer is curable unless broncho-pneumonia settles in after surgery. Unfortunately this happened and within 8 days of surgery John died at the young age of 47.
When John came to BC with his parents the family settled in Port Hammond, Maple Ridge area. His brothers and father worked at Hamond Cedar. In 1929 John is a driver for Maple Ridge Mun. Jumping to 1941 John A with his son Norman work as millworkers for Thomsen & Clark in New Westminster. In 1944 John with his daughter Muriel work for Pac Veneer. They live next door to his in-laws Richard and Sara Hogg. Daughter Muriel married Joseph Koberstein and died in 1979 at the age of 53 in New Westminster (#1979-09-018006). Wife Susan moved to Sicamous to be with her son Norman, daughter-in-law Norma and their family until her
death Feb 9, 1981. Based on her medical record listed on her obit she struggled for years with heart disease and diabetes. The diabetes
taking their toil on her when in 1978 she had complications and required amputation of her foot and a pacemaker was insterted to help with her circulation. At the time of her death there were 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren (names not listed in obit). She is buried next to her husband in New Fraser cemetery sharing the same headstone.

She leaves her loving daughter and son-in-law, Eveline and Roland Veinotte, Maple Ridge, 3 loving grandchildren Sharon and husband Bill Jorgenson, Maple Ridge, Susan and husband Brad Munger, Ferndale, Wa., and Tom Veinotte and wife Paula, Maple Ridge; 5 great-grandchildren, Susanne, Steven and Kevin Jorgenson and Sharon and Matthew Munger; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service Monday, December 2 at 1:30 p.m. in Burnett Memorial Baptist Church, 11859 Laity St., Maple Ridge, Pastor Bruce Christensen officiating. Interment in Maple Ridge Cemetery. Osborn's Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel directors. In lieu of flowers donations to charity of own choice appreciated.
